Charlie Sweeny is the coach for the 7th grade boys D1 team for 2024/2025. Charlie has been coaching basketball since 2017. He has coached baseball for McLean Little League, Rakers Travel Baseball and McLean High School for 17 years. Charlie credits going to the legendary coach Morgan Wooten basketball camp for 5 years teaching him the fundamentals of the game. He started as point guard for McLean High School in the mid 90’s and played in this same select league growing up in McLean.
After attending James Madison University he had aspirations of being a high school basketball coach but decided to work for his family business and be an assistant baseball coach at MHS. Basketball has always been his true love though. Charlie believes in teaching young men how to play the game the right way. Number one requirement is always play your hardest. Second is teaching fundamentals that stick with his players for a lifetime. His teams play a full court attacking defense which leads to a fast break offense created by forcing turnovers. Playing at a fast tempo requires a full roster that contributes. Players enjoy his style of play. He likes to have his entire roster contribute to the teams success. He feels an obligation to teach his players important life values through the sport of basketball. Hard work, learning how to compete, never give up and be a good teammate.
Charlie is married with 4 children (Charlie 10, Presley 8, Colt 6, Palmer 3). He has lived his entire life in McLean attending Chesterbrook, Longfellow, MHS ‘96 and JMU ‘01.
