Playing Time Policy

Playing Time Policy

When it comes to playing time during league matches, MYA Volleyball has a two tier approach:

  • House Leagues: EQUAL PLAYING TIME COMMITMENT
  • Select & Travel Leagues: NO EQUAL OR MINIMUM PLAYING TIME COMMITMENT

House Leagues
Equal playing time is supported through the use of "Continuous Substitution".  All players on the team are part of one continuous lineup with players rotating on and off the court in sequential order with each new service rotation.  No one student athlete has the opportunity to play any more than another. Coaches do have the discretion to have a player sit out the first game following a missed practice so they can see what their teammates learned at practice that week.

Select and Travel Leagues
There is no equal playing time commitment.  Select and Travel leagues use positional substitution following the same model practiced by volleyball programs worldwide. Volleyball is a positional sport -- some positions naturally have more playing time than others.  MYA Volleyball coaches determine which players substitute on and off the court taking into account individual, team and game dynamics.  Individual playing time is influenced by positional needs, skills, effort, attitude and practice attendance. There is no requirement for coaches to play any student athletes for a minimum amount of time during matches.

Coaches will communicate any issues that impact playing time to the student athlete. If parents have concerns about playing time, they should ask their student athlete to discuss the matter with the team coach no earlier than 24 hours after the match.  Keep in mind that coaches are not required to deliver a minimum playing time -- that only exists in the House Leagues.  If necessary, the MYA Volleyball Director can be contacted.
